“6 Things You Should Never Do During Sandhya (Evening Time)”

Introduction:

In Hindu culture, Sandhya or evening time holds great spiritual and energetic importance. It is the transitional period between day and night — a sacred time to pause, reflect, and reconnect with divinity. According to scriptures and spiritual traditions, the energies during Sandhya are subtle, making it an ideal time for meditation, prayer, and inner cleansing. However, there are also certain actions that one must consciously avoid during this time, as they are believed to attract negative energy, disturb the natural harmony, or disrespect the sanctity of the moment.

Here are six things one should never do during the Sandhya hour:

1. Avoid Sleeping During Sandhya:
Sleeping during evening time, especially during twilight, is considered inauspicious. As per the scriptures, Sandhya is a time meant for awakening one’s spiritual consciousness, not resting. Sleeping at this time can dull your energies, disturb your mental clarity, and lead to lethargy. Ancient texts state that the gods descend during this sacred period, and sleeping during their visit is seen as a sign of disrespect.

Moreover, Ayurveda also advises against sleeping in the evening, as it can imbalance your doshas, especially increasing Kapha, leading to issues like sluggishness, depression, and even respiratory problems over time.

2. Do Not Eat Non-Vegetarian Food or Consume Alcohol:
Evening time is spiritually potent and eating non-vegetarian food or consuming alcohol during Sandhya is considered a Tamasic (low vibration) act. Such substances disturb the purity of the mind and body and block the higher channels of energy. In many Hindu households, dinner is either avoided during Sandhya or kept light and satvik (pure and vegetarian).

Consuming Tamasic food not only attracts negative energies but also weakens your aura. The divine energies around us during this time require a sattvic (pure) environment to manifest fully.

3. Avoid Arguing or Using Harsh Words:
Sandhya is the time to calm your mind, not to engage in conflicts. Raising your voice, using abusive language, or getting into arguments during this time creates an environment of negativity. According to spiritual science, whatever vibrations you emit during Sandhya multiply manifold. So, anger or frustration expressed at this time can linger and impact your emotional state for the rest of the day.

It’s recommended to observe silence or speak gently, focus on peaceful thoughts, and engage in acts of kindness or gratitude during this time.

4. Do Not Ignore Evening Prayer or Aarti:
In many traditions, skipping the evening prayer or Aarti (especially in temples or home shrines) is considered inauspicious. The vibrations created by chanting mantras, ringing bells, and lighting diyas at this hour are believed to cleanse the surroundings of negative energy and invite divine blessings.

Even if one is busy, it is suggested to take a few minutes to connect with the divine — light a lamp, offer gratitude, or chant a simple mantra. This small act can bring peace, positivity, and protection to your home and family.

5. Avoid Sweeping the House or Throwing Out Garbage:
According to Vastu Shastra and traditional beliefs, sweeping the house or throwing garbage out during evening hours is equivalent to removing prosperity from the home. Lakshmi — the goddess of wealth and prosperity — is believed to visit during this time. Cleaning or throwing out waste at this hour is seen as an act that drives her away.

Ideally, cleaning should be done before sunset, and no major household activity involving disposal should be carried out once the Sandhya hour begins.

6. Don’t Neglect Personal Cleanliness:
Before engaging in any evening prayers or rituals, it’s important to cleanse oneself. Remaining in dirty clothes or not washing hands, feet, or face before Sandhya can lower the spiritual benefits of the time. Purity of body reflects in the purity of mind. Bathing (if not already done) or simply washing up before sunset is a respectful way to prepare for divine connection.

This act of physical cleansing also symbolizes mental and emotional purification, aligning your inner state with the peaceful energies of the evening.
